MIND + SOUL

Knowledge can be a burden event though it is necessary for human progress. When we decide to gain knowledge in any subject or aspect  of our lives, we must also agree to carry that knowledge for the breadth of our lives until our physiology decides to take it away from us. All of us have knowledge of something of which we would rather remain ignorant. For the sake of stability within families or even  national politics, some knowledge is best held by only a select few. So the condition of being the fool, lacking knowledge and maintaining innocence to certain things, should not be deemed disadvantageous. 

<Soul>

Religion, spirituality, or any attempt to discern the Spirt must also be burdensome. Like knowledge,  spiritual endeavors are necessary for the progression of society. But the burden of  such things reveals itself when the individual's spirit is neglected and rendered insignificant. A raped woman's spirit must be safeguarded from the burden of any religious views on abortion. Lest she becomes nothing more than a conduit for religious gatekeeping. This wouldn't diminish the necessity for spiritual endeavors in our world, but merely refurbish the prevailing religious status quo.

  "This was art! Expression that is born out of the necessity of ritual to navigate life." I came across those words in famed artist Viola Davis' memoir 'Finding Me'. She was  describing a group of indigenous women she had come across in The Gambia and how  they would break out in drumming and singing together in between preparing meals and breastfeeding. She goes on to challenge the doctrine of her alma mater, Juilliard, by saying that  "the potency of artistry...shifts humanity".  I will not presume that anything that I create has the potential to shift anything in  anyone but myself. Fear(S): A Conversation on Exposure Therapy

 Exposure therapy is one of several methods used by psychologist to treat various forms of phobias.  This project aims to visually highlight a few phobias in an attempt to expose the exhibitor to sights that may be deemed fearful but, if rendered artistically, that fear may be lessened. There are plenty of other fears we all have to face in today's society that can't exactly be expressed visually. Fears such as rejection, racism, sexism, bigotry.
